Case study

Bringing together global engineering experts to explore how climate change, demographic shifts and new technologies will reshape the infrastructure systems societies depend on

Featured insights from leading global engineering organisations including Boeing, Shell, Ørsted and Tokamak Energy

Delivered a long-term knowledge resource used across digital channels, events and stakeholder engagement

Created a multi-format content hub combining expert interviews, long-form articles and video insights

Objective

Lloyd’s Register Foundation, working alongside TWI, wanted to position themselves as experts on the changing face of global infrastructure to their existing network of members, customers and partners, as well as the wider engineering industry.

Approach

We identified a strategic framing around the challenges facing infrastructure over the next 20 years – particularly driven by climate change and shifting demographics.

We approached prominent subject matter experts who could offer perspective on how these trends were reshaping different areas of infrastructure – energy, transport, buildings, or space infrastructure – including established global companies and exciting innovators, such as Boeing, Shell, Orsted, and Tokamak Energy.

For each we conducted an interview to draw out their insights into a specific areas, crating a thought leadership article and talking heads video for each.

The result was the Infrastructure 2040 content hub, which hosted the full programme or thought leadership and formed the foundation of an ongoing trust-building campaign.

To promote the hub, we drew out pithy insights as text and video snippets from the core content and used these to power a programme of social media promotion, through the organisations’ own channels, and those of contributors.

The articles and videos were really strong and added unique and insightful content to the engineering industry’s discussions around future infrastructure. This helped position us as thought leaders in this evolving sector, but more importantly, gave us a platform to raise awareness of issues that need to be considered around long-term planning for safe and sustainable global infrastructure. The project is a valuable long-term resource that we can draw on to engage industry and demonstrate our expertise, both through digital channels and direct conversations.”

— David Reid, Director of Strategic Communications & Global Engagement, Lloyd's Register Foundation

Why it matters

Infrastructure decisions shape societies for decades. Yet many of the forces transforming infrastructure – from climate pressures to new technologies – are still poorly understood outside specialist communities.

By convening leading voices across industry and research, Infrastructure 2040 helped create a credible platform for discussing the long-term future of global infrastructure.

The programme positioned Lloyd’s Register Foundation and TWI as trusted conveners of this conversation, while creating a lasting resource that continues to support industry engagement, policy dialogue and strategic partnerships.
